Four Washington sonography schools are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). One of them offers a bachelor’s degree, and three of them offer associate’s degrees. The titles of the sonography school programs vary a little bit. Some schools say they are “Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound,” training, and other schools call their programs “Diagnostic Sonography.”
Career Outlook for Sonography in Washington
In Washington, the demand for diagnostic medical sonographers is high. It is one of the fastest growing occupations for people with associate’s degrees. Sonographers earned an average of $30.95 an hour in 2010. More than half of the sonographers (61%) worked in hospitals in 2010. The state of Washington offers four sonography schools, and one of the Washington sonography schools offers a bachelor’s degree. Three of the sonography schools in Washington are in the Seattle metropolitan area. The largest hospitals (other than psychiatric hospitals) are: Providence Regional Medical Center – two campuses (Everett), Swedish Medical Center/First Hill Campus (Seattle) with campuses in other locations, University of Washington Medical Center (Seattle), Harborview Medical Center (Seattle), PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center (Vancouver), and Sacred Heart Medical Center (Spokane). Therefore, you can train there and find jobs in large hospitals.
